Re:Mix –  a new project within Mistra Future Fashion on the separation of nylon and elastane fiber mixtures

In order to recycle garments in the future we need to be able to extract new materials of garments composed of many different materials. Re:Mix will examine the technical methods necessary to separate nylon and elastane from other fiber blends, making it possible to recycle these textiles.

Stockholm September 28, 2016. Re:Mix gathers parties from the entire textile chain, from fabric manufacturers to recycling organizations, whom together will identify and develop technical and sustainable strategies for fiber separation. The project is financed by Mistra Future Fashion, and RE:Source, the innovation program for waste utilization. It is an extension project in Mistra Future Fashion’s theme 4, Recycling, and will be led by Dr. Åsa Östlund, SP.

“Today there is a demand for new technology to facilitate separation of different fiber qualities that the majority of the garments are made of, “says Dr. Åsa Östlund. ”Re:Mix complements our current work in Mistra Future Fashion on how we can improve textile recycling and it has been received with great interest from the industry.”

Re:Mix starts this fall and in early 2017 a workshop, open to all interested parties, is organized. The project involves SP, Swerea IVF, the Royal Institute of Technology, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Novozymes, Houdini Sportswear, Swedish Stockings, I:Co and Polykemi AB.

RE:Source is a national cross-industry innovation arena, a venue for a variety of operators in the Swedish industry, waste management and research. RE:Source  aims to develop innovations that will result in Sweden becoming world leaders on waste minimizing and utilizing. The innovation program RE:Source is funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas, and led by the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden in collaboration with Chalmers Industrial Technology, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Swerea.
